I’ll get right to it. Augustana had a big showing this past weekend at the 2017 Division III Track and Field National Championships at SPIRE Institute hosted by Mount Union University in Geneva, Ohio. After it was all over and the points were totaled up, Augustana finished 10th in the country, beating out rival North Central by 1.5 points for a total of 21. The winner was Wisconsin La-Crosse who finished with 47 points.

Hammer – Cody Wheeler – 15th Place – 51.88M (170 feet 2 inches)
I know that this wasn’t Cody’s best performance, but it is your first National meet. When I was leading off my first National meet in the 4x400M Relay you want to know what I ran the week before in qualifying? – 49.00. Want to know what I ran at Nationals? – 54.2… It happens but now that you have gained this experience, I know that you will do well and represent Augustana again next year.

Hammer – Marckus Simmons – 1st Place – 61.59M (202 feet 1 inch) – National Champion and All-American
*First individual event winner since Ted McMillan in 2008. What a phenominal job Marckus did today. If he had quit throwing after his very first throw… he would have won nationals by 12 centimeters. But, it was his second throw that hammered (bad pun sorry) himself into the record books and an Individual Event title at 61.59M. Great job Marckus!

400M Dash – Isaac Smith – 6th Place – 47.69 – All-American
Isaac ran a good race and improved his time from preliminaries on Friday by .51 seconds. Way to finish your career at Augie with an exceptional individual accomplishment. Great job Isaac!
5000M Run – Tanner Osing – 18th Place – 15:19.78
Tanner had a great XC season that spilled over right into track season and had an exceptional year. He did a fantastic job qualifying for nationals and 18th in the nation is nothing to be taken lightly. Great job Tanner!

4x400M Relay – Josh, Jeffrey, Kyle, and Isaac – 6th Place – 3:13.83 – All-Americans
I knew you guys could do it! It was quite a fight but you guys did a wonderful job at staying in there and making a bid for scoring points and you did! Great job; and with three of you coming back for next year, maybe you’ll be in contention for a top three finish!
