What a fantastic day of track and field for the Augustana Vikings out in hot and humid Waverly, Iowa for the 2016 Division III Men’s and Women’s Track & Field National meet.

Sunny skies, humid conditions, and deep competition all had their punches with today’s competitors. In the end, 1 individual made their way into Saturday’s Finals with noteworthy times.

Discus – Men’s

With a great field in the Discus competition, Kevin battled and fought his way through his first National meet. Although he only had one good through, he heaved it out for a great throw of 43.88 meters (143′ 11″) for an overall 20th place. 20th in the country is not something to take lightly. Great job Kevin!

(sorry, NCAA did not have a camera for the Discus competition)

400 Hurdles – Men’s

Another strong field for our competitor Josh Yamamoto to go up against. Josh came into today’s competition ranked 17th overall. He fought his way in lane 8 for a time of 54.43 improving his rank and finishing 15th. This was Josh’s first National meet as well. Great job Josh!

3,000 Meters Steeplechase – Men’s

With 2 heats of 10 individuals and the top 5 from each heat advancing to Saturday’s final, Keith ran a smart race and stayed in good positioning the whole race. Keith, coming in with an overall rank of 5th, finished 3rd in his heat with a time of 9:15.36. He will be competing for bragging rights and All-American status Saturday @ 12:30pm.

10,000 Meters – Men’s

What a hot day to run a 10K! The leader who curently has the Division 3 record finished at 30:18 so you can imagine that it was a scorcher. Ethan Koch did well and had a great National meet appearance. He finished 17th with a time of 33:17.71. Great job Ethan!

4×400 Meters Relay – Men’s

What can I say? Augustana has always been a contender in the 4×400 Meters and they did a great job today running a time of 3:12.95. But, HOLY CRAP!!!!! SIX Teams under 3:12?!?!?!?! UN-REAL. Augustana put up a good fight trying to get back in it, but obviously there was quite a bit of competition this year! They came in with the 5th fastest time and got 11th place overall. It is worth noting that this year’s 4×4 squad had 3 Sophomores and a Junior. This young team will be dangerous next year!

Approx. Splits: Kyle: 49.7; Alex M.: 48.3; Jeffrey: 47.3; Isaac: 47.7.
